In Apple’s latest iPhone 7, the legal section states that one needs to hold the device 5mm away from them to meet the US Radiation limit requirements. Once you touch the iPhone, you are now above the US Radiation limit; being a touch screen phone this obviously causes concern.
Can Cell Phones/EMF Cause Cancer?
It may seem as if every day you hear that something else can cause cancer, but a study from the U.S. National Toxicology Program found that rats exposed to the radio frequency radiation that comes from cell phones for 9 hours a day, seven days a week, were more likely to develop cancers such as malignant gliomas and heart tumors. In an analysis published in the May 2008 issue of the International Journal of Oncology, researchers found significant associations between long-term cell phone use and brain tumor risk.

Another 2016 paper looks at several fertility clinics around the world that have reported higher infertility rates among frequent male cell phone users. It turns out that cell phones can cause even greater risks to children and unborn babies because, according to a review of studies from 2009-2014, “the rate of microwave wireless radiation (MWR) absorption is higher in children than adults because their skulls are thinner and their relative size is smaller.” Whereas, “Fetuses are particularly vulnerable, because MWR exposure can lead to degeneration of the protective sheath that surrounds brain neurons.
Not only are children more vulnerable physically they are also at greater risk because they will be around and using cell phones for most of their life. Lennart Hardell, also head of one of the biggest studies of cell phone radiation risk says, “Children under 12 should not use mobiles except in emergencies,” and that, “teenagers should use hands-free devices or headsets and concentrate on texting. At 20 the danger diminishes because then the brain is fully developed.”
What Can You Do to Protect Yourself and Your Children?
Cell phones and wireless devices are now a part of our everyday life, but there are a few things you can do to reduce their impact upon your health.
- Keep your cell phone at least 6 inches from your body as much as possible. This may mean making use of the speakerphone or using a head set during phone calls, and keeping the phone out of your pockets.
- Devices should be kept away from a pregnant women’s abdomen.
- Try to use your cell phone less. Not only will it protect your physical health, but it will help you sleep better.
